Hotel Dieu was founded in 1859 by the Daughters of Charity who managed it as the sister to Charity Hospital. The hospital opened its doors to slaves and seamen during the Civil War, providing access to care to our most vulnerable population, and remaining the noblest of causes for the Daughters of Charity. Hotel Dieu was a site for milestone medical research developing treatment for illnesses like meningitis.
Members of this society honor Hotel Dieu’s legacy by leading with compassion, perseverance, and dedication to serving their community.
