Donor Spotlight: Ann Conn, MD – Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a crucial time to spotlight the importance of mental well-being. This annual observance serves as a reminder to prioritize mental health, reduce stigma, and foster understanding. In a world where the pressures of daily life can often overwhelm, this month stands as a beacon of hope, encouraging conversations, support, and action to promote mental wellness for all.

During Mental Health Awareness Month, it’s essential to acknowledge that mental health is a vital aspect of overall health. Just as we care for our physical well-being through exercise and nutrition, we must also nurture our minds. This month provides an opportunity to educate ourselves and others about mental health conditions, dismantle stereotypes, and offer support to those struggling. Whether it’s through sharing personal stories, attending events, or simply checking in on loved ones, every action taken contributes to a more compassionate and inclusive society.

Ann Conn

In May 2023, Ann Conn, MD shared her intent to create the Austin and Colin Conn Endowed Professorship in Psychiatry at LSU Health New Orleans for research, patient care, and education for bipolar disorder. Dr. Conn created this professorship in loving memory of her two sons who died from bipolar disorder in an effort to increase support of research, patient care, and education, relating to bipolar disorder. With donors like Dr. Conn, the LSU Health Foundation can continue supporting the Department of Psychiatry at LSU Health New Orleans in their work to train future mental health professionals in Louisiana.

Mental Health Awareness Month underscores the importance of seeking help when needed and destigmatizing conversations around mental health. By prioritizing self-care, practicing empathy, and advocating for accessible mental health resources, we can collectively work towards a world where everyone feels supported and empowered to prioritize their mental well-being. As May unfolds, let’s embrace the spirit of Mental Health Awareness Month, sparking meaningful discussions, fostering empathy, and championing mental health for all.
